Purpose: Follow Thomas on his journey from courage to honest questions, from grief to worship, while practicing English through reading, vocabulary, speaking, reflection, and writing.

1) Before You Begin
Thomas is often remembered as “Doubting Thomas,” but the Gospel of John shows us a fuller picture. In this lesson, you will follow four steps in Thomas' journey.
- Courageous Thomas — Thomas was willing to follow Jesus into danger.
- Questioning Thomas — Thomas asked Jesus an honest question.
- Grieving Thomas — Thomas struggled after Jesus died on the cross.
- Worshiping Thomas — Thomas confessed Jesus as “My Lord and my God.”

2) Part One — Courageous Thomas
Read John 11:14–16. Jesus told His disciples that Lazarus had died. Going near Jerusalem could be dangerous, but Thomas said, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
- What had happened to Lazarus?
- Why did Jesus say He was glad He had not been there?
- What did Thomas say to the other disciples?
- Why could Thomas be called “Courageous Thomas”?

3) Part Two — Questioning Thomas
Read John 14:5–8. Jesus told His disciples that He was going away and that they knew the way. Thomas honestly said that they did not know where Jesus was going, and asked how they could know the way.

4) Part Three — Grieving Thomas
Read John 20:24–27. Thomas was not with the other disciples when Jesus first appeared to them after His resurrection. When they told Thomas, “We have seen the Lord,” Thomas found it hard to believe. He was not only doubting; he was grieving.
- Where was Thomas when Jesus first appeared to the other disciples?

5) Part Four — Worshiping Thomas
Read John 20:28–29 and John 21:1–2. When Thomas saw the risen Jesus, he said, “My Lord and my God!” Later, Thomas was still with the other disciples when Jesus revealed Himself again by the Sea of Tiberias.

Thomas did not remain a doubter. He loved Jesus, followed Him with courage, asked honest questions, grieved deeply after the cross, and then worshiped the risen Jesus as “My Lord and my God.” Jesus helped Thomas believe, and Jesus said that those who have not seen and yet have believed are blessed.
